Off the Record: Q&A Interview on the Evolving Role of Records Management
Many law firms we work with report that the role of the records manager has changed in recent years. A growing number of firms view Records Management as a cornerstone of Information Governance — especially as clients are scrutinizing firm retention policies and as the industry as a whole is moving to embrace electronic documents and records.
In this fascinating Q&A interview with Off the Record, John Churchill, Records Department Manager at Nelson Mullins, shares his experience and insights on how the Records Department helps respond to client RFP requests; its contribution broader Information Governance initiatives; managing compliance with client-specific retention requirements; and the evolving role of the Records Manager within the firm.
Today we are pleased to announce the release of several new features that make it easier for firms to switch from their old system to FileTrail. Many of these features were developed in response to the market need created by legacy RMS products, such as LegalKEY, which are no longer being updated to address current industry standards.
In 2016, the Legal Services Management and the Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) at Dentons decided it was time for a major records management software upgrade. Over the course of 10+ years, Dentons had expanded across the globe and now had more than 7,700 lawyers. Managing disposition and retention of the firm’s physical and electronic records using the limited automation of multiple legacy IT system was inefficient and costly. Its records management system functionality had stagnated and was unable to meet increasingly rigorous client and regulatory information governance requirements.
Keep in mind that staying with a product that has taken this road doesn’t bode well for the future. HP sunsetted ARM, with a final end of life in the past.
